Scribe x Chef Joshua McFadden: WEEKEND AT CAPTAIN WHIDBEY

April 24 - April 26, 2026

There’s something about this place in spring, the light stretching a little longer, the water just beginning to warm, the sense that everything is quietly waking up again.

For one weekend in April, we’re gathering around the table with friends, welcoming Scribe Winery and Chef Joshua McFadden to the shores of Penn Cove for a series of meals that lean into the season, the setting, and the simple pleasure of eating well together.

Expect thoughtful cooking, good bottles, and a pace that invites you to settle in.

about SCRIBE WINERY

Rooted in Sonoma Valley on a historic pre-Prohibition vineyard, Scribe is led by fourth-generation farmers Andrew, Adam, and Kelly Mariani. Their approach is guided by a respect for the land—farming in balance with the surrounding ecosystem and allowing each wine to reflect its place, season, and character with minimal intervention.

Kelly Mariani brings that same perspective to the kitchen. With a background shaped by time in Ireland, Italy, and Chez Panisse, her cooking is grounded in what’s growing and ready—simple, thoughtful, and closely tied to the land.

ABOUT CHEF JOSHUA MCFADDEN

Joshua McFadden is a chef and author known for his deeply seasonal, ingredient-driven approach to cooking. His James Beard Award–winning debut, Six Seasons: A New Way with Vegetables, reshaped how home cooks think about vegetables and established his voice as a leading advocate for cooking with the seasons. He is also the author of Grains for Every Season and Six Seasons of Pasta, continuing his exploration of flavor, technique, and the rhythms of the natural world.

In addition to his writing, Joshua works as a culinary creative and consultant, guiding restaurant concepts and food projects across the country. Earlier in his career, he founded Submarine Hospitality in Portland, Oregon; he is no longer affiliated with the company. Today, his work centers on uniting culinary vision, operational insight, and experiential design.  Joshua is restoring Berney Farm, a historic 50-acre property in Springdale, Oregon, developing it as an agricultural and creative hub where farming, food, and design intersect.

schedule of events

Each day brings something different—whether you're warming up by the fire, enjoying a dinner in the lodge, or getting outside to explore. There’s plenty to take in, so join in on as much as you’d like, and settle into the relaxed pace of the week.

FRIday, April 24th

Dinner at the Lodge

We’ll begin inside the 1907 lodge with a family-style dinner—multi-course, generous, and rooted in the surrounding waters and fields.

Chef Joshua McFadden joins the Captain Whidbey kitchen alongside Scribe’s Kelly Mariani for a collaborative menu shaped by what’s close at hand and what’s tasting especially good right now.

Scribe wines will be poured throughout the evening, paired to each course and shared across the table.

Saturday, april 25th

Breakfast at the Lodge

Ease into the day with breakfast in the lodge—coffee, something warm, and a slower start before the afternoon unfolds.

Sunset Patio Party; 5–9pm

As the light shifts over the lagoon, we’ll head outside.

An early evening raw bar sets the tone, followed by a casual gathering on the patio with classic cookout favorites from the grill. It’s the kind of party that starts at sunset and lingers.

Scribe wines will be flowing throughout the evening—easy, unpretentious, and meant to be enjoyed with your feet firmly planted in the grass.

Menu items subject to change.

Late Night Campfire Hang: 9pm – late

When the music softens and the sky goes dark, we’ll keep things going by the fire.

A glass in hand, something warm to eat, and nowhere else to be.
